In NSW Apprentices are require to claim down to their declared minimum riding weight. The minimum riding weight is the weight that appears next to the claim. If an apprentice is engaged to ride a horse whereby their eligible claim will reduce the weight carried below the minimum riding weight, then the apprentice is only eligible to claim down to the declared minimum riding weight. For example: Apprentice A is eligible to claim 3kg and has a minimum riding weight of 52kg. Apprentice A is declared to ride a horse that has been handicapped at 53kg. Apprentice A claims 1kg and rides down to 52kg.
